The YouTube Kids app has arrived and it feels like we have been waiting for it for ages, without realising it. I don’t usually review apps, but this one is just what you need if you have YouTube-loving children. My girls really enjoy watching Youtube, more than terrestrial TV sometimes. However, it has always worried me. There are constant ads which are either irrelevant or inappropriate and it is really easy to end up with a grown up themed video by mistake. With the YouTube Kids app their viewing is much more controlled and safe.
Of course the safety aspect is the one I am most concerned about but the children want a fun viewing experience. The Youtube app looks fun. It is really colourful and has a fun animation and tune when you open the app. It is very bright and simple and much easier to use than the normal YouTube interface.
The home screen shows lots of recommended videos. You can see my kids favourite shows! You can easily find TV shows or music using the large icons across the top. There are also education videos and an explore section which gives you a random selection.
The best part for the girls is that you can search using voice recognition. This part of the software is really good and means younger children can find what they are looking for really easily. I was really surprised how accurate it was.
There are no comments on the videos, another thing which is really good as often the videos are child-friendly but the comments have swearing or are really unkind. There are ads on some of the videos but the ones I’ve seen are suitable for children.
The YouTube app is available for free. We have downloaded it for all the devices and the girls much prefer it. I am happy that they are having fun whilst only watching appropriate things. Thank you YouTube for reading our minds and giving us the thing we really wanted before we even realised it was what we wanted!
