We were so excited to hear Wicked was coming to the Birmingham Hippodrome. It has received over 100 international awards and everyone I know who has seen it came back raving. The girls are finally old enough to see it, as it is recommended for ages 7 and above. I think this is accurate as it is 2 hours 45 minutes with one interval. My girls were all enthralled but there was a small child next to me who was really too young. For us, it was a magical family day out – a real treat for all of us. We came out singing. Wicked comes to Birmingham Hippodrome

Although I had enjoyed singing Defying Gravity many a time, I did not really know much about the plot of Wicked except the basic premise. The one thing I hadn’t realised was how funny it was. The show is really humorous, with proper belly laughs throughout. The show is really an exploration of friendship and what it means to be good and the reverse to be Wicked. It plays with your expectations of the characters from the original story of The Wizard of Oz.

The cast was spellbinding. Amy Ross who played Elphaba has an extraordinary voice. She blew us away with her rendition of Defying Gravity. Helen Woolf  as Glinda, was delightful. I loved her song Popular. Her performance is so subtly nuanced – I spent the whole show trying to work out if I loved Glinda or loathed her. Her song Popular was Molly’s favourite.

The set and costumes are beautiful. They really give the feel you are in a different world. Glinda always makes a dramatic appearance with glittering gowns which sparkle in the light and a giant bubble which blows bubbles out of the bottom. They really give the feel you are in a different world.

The whole family loved the show. During the interval we had to explain the flashback at the beginning, and how it was a different interpretation of the Wizard in Oz story, which made a really interesting discussion. They loved the soundtrack which we put on as soon as we got home. Charlotte’s favourite part was the flying monkeys (of course) and the Rose loved the song Defying Gravity – she’s such a diva. I just loved every magical second.

The tour is on at the Birmingham Hippodrome until the 29th April.
