Tutus for Teddies

Make a cute tutu for your teddy. With literacy ideas to match.

I don’t know how it happened but somehow I have turned into a Ballet Mum. I feel a little duped about the whole thing. I wasn’t really looking for a club for my eldest as she does so much already but the twins had been wanting to try ballet for ages and I found a ballet school where they could all go at the same time – so it made sense for my eldest to go along too. A term later and somehow she is doing two lessons a week as well as exams and extra coaching. Hmmmmm…. Anyway they all love it which is why I wanted to read a few ballet books with them.

The Jellybeans and the Big Dance by Laura Numeroff and Nate Evans

We found the lovely book The Jellybeans Love to Dance to read on the iPad. It’s a sweet story about a little girl who loves dancing and dances everywhere. My girls definitely identify with it.

The girls really loved the teddies in the background of the first picture and wanted to make tutus for their teddies. I remembered reading a great tutorial for making an easy no-sew tutu on the Imagination Tree. The full instructions are there and they really are easy to follow. To make the tutu fit a teddy you just need smaller lengths of fabric and elastic. It took about half an hour to make each tutu.

Molly made one for her tiny rabbit and was able to do it totally on her own. It was actually great for practicing tying knots.

After we made the tutu we used a rectangle of felt to make a ballet top and cut a hole in it. The girls decorated the top with some sticky jewels.

The teddies looked really lovely in their tutus. Definitely ready to dance.

The teddies in the picture are actually the nursery bears which come home from school periodically. This gave us a really good purpose for writing. As the twins are only three they drew a picture and I wrote the words for them, describing how the teddies went to ballet and then we made a tutu for them.

The only problem is now I have to make some for the girls as well so they can match their teddies. At least it will give me something to do while I’m waiting for them outside of ballet lesson.
