February is definitely the best time to plan a holiday. We have got through the longest month in  the year and now is the time to look to the future. If like me, you have made it your resolution to be more adventurous with the family then a holiday to Colorado certainly ticks all the boxes. You can spend the day having unforgettable adventures and the nights relaxing in the luxurious mansions in Colorado. Of course, the first thing you think of is the Rocky Mountains but this region has even more to offer and is a wonderful destination for families.

Rocky Mountains

No trip to Colorado is complete without visiting the Rocky Mountains. However, this is a vast area stretches over 3000 miles and it is hard to know where to begin. If you have children with you then you will want them to enjoy the natural beauty without putting them in danger. Visiting somewhere like The Rocky Mountain Animal Park is a fantastic place to start. You can see animals in their native environment and even get really close to the animals with a trail ride on horseback.

Train Ride

A wonderful way to see the mountains is on board a train. On the Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cog Railway you get to travel up the 14,115-foot-high summit of Pikes Peak while sitting in a comfortable carriage. You will not only experience the thrill of climbing the peak but will also travel through the aspen and pine groves and along the steep boulder canyons. You will see various wildlife in their natural setting, including deer, elk, marmots, bear and bighorn sheep. At the summit, you can enjoy the marvellous views and even have a meal at The Summit House.

Denver

If you are looking for a city break and love the hustle and bustle of a big city then a stay in Denver will not disappoint. Known as the Mile High City, because of the position of the 13th step of the Colorado State Capitol Building being a mile high. This city is near the mountains on high rolling plains. This provides a stunning backdrop. The vibrant city has lots to offer families. There are museums, a zoo and a waterpark as well as an aquarium and even a Butterfly Pavillion. In the Denver Art Museum, you can discover world-class art. If you are in Denver during May then don’t miss the Cinco de Mayo Festival, one of the biggest in America. More than 350 vendors will be serving up tacos, enchiladas, burritos and more of the best Colorado Mexican cuisine. Green chilli is a Denver culinary staple, so expect the food to be truly first class.

Natural Hot Springs

If you want to relax after all the adventure then make sure you plan a trip to one of the numerous natural hot springs in the region. You can visit the springs even in Winter and this really is a fun and unique experience the whole family with love. Several of the Springs also offer slides and twisters and an aquatic rock climbing wall. It is worth checking the website of the pool you are planning to visit as there are often restrictions for young children and some are only open at certain times of the year. With so many mountains in the are, there has to be amazing skiing. Aspen Snowmass, is a family-friendly resort which offers a wealth of lessons at every level as well as a beginner’s terrain park to instil confidence. There is even a tubing run for even more Winter fun.

If you prefer your history to be even older then you can learn about dinosaurs, even walking in their footprints at Dinosaur National Monument, Dinosaur Ridge and Picketwire Canyonlands. there are several museums which feature dinosaurs such as the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, the Dinosaur Journey Museum and the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center. You can look for images in the strange rock formations, you might even see rocks which look like kissing camels. While in The Garden of the Gods, you can go on a bike or segway trail, or go rock climbing. Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre in Morrison is a fantastic area for fossil hunting. This is a  pair of geologically formed sandstone monoliths. Next to it is an amphitheatre with amazing acoustics provided by the rock formation.
