July is here and the Summer holidays are fast approaching. I was planning to stay in the UK but after a wet and cold half term, a trip abroad sounds really appealing. It’s easy to keep little ones entertained when the weather is sunny, but much harder when it’s raining and miserable. Even taking them out for lunch costs money. Ok, perhaps I am trying to convince myself that a trip abroad is cost effective.

A trip to Spain would be perfect for us. I am spending rather too much time at the moment looking at luxury villas in Spain. It’s not too far for the children to travel and with beaches and water rides to keep them entertained and lots of art galleries and amazing architecture for me. It is the perfect combination.

SPAIN 2

Here are my top five Spanish holiday destinations.

1. Mallorca

Mallorca is the one place in Spain we have visited. We went for my 30th birthday and I would love to visit again. perhaps when I am 40. It was a brilliant destination for a young family. It was our first holiday abroad with my daughter, who was just turning one. The weather was amazing and the beaches were unspoilt and lovely with dark blue seas and clear waters. We spent every day by the pool and loved every minute.

2. Barcelona

I’ve always wanted to visit Barcelona. I love the combination of city and beach meaning that you can have a day of culture followed by a day relaxing on the beach. I would love to see the Gaudi buildings, especiallyThe Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família. As well as that I would take a trip to the Picasso museum. My eldest has studied Picasso this year and it would be amazing to show her some of the artworks for real.

3. Benidorm

Beautiful beaches, wonderful water parks and lovely hotels. This is such a straightforward choice and it’s no wonder is such a popular Spanish retreat. You are almost guaranteed sunny weather and there is so much to do for families. There are regular flights to Benidorm and it’s a really cost-effective.

SPAIN 5

Andalucia

When I go on holiday I want to immerse myself in the local culture as well as get a good suntan. I want to sample the food and have a go at the language. Most of all I want to come away with a feeling of how real people live in the country and not just the tourists. From a villa tucked away in the mountains, you can get a taste of the real Spain. Andalucia has everything you associate with Spain. Sunshine and flamenco dancers all washed down with a dash of sherry. To top it all, is its beautiful rugged landscape, with stunning palaces and crumbling castles.

Top 5 Destinations in Spain for Families5. Madrid

A trip to Spain would not be complete without visiting the capital. This is the largest city in Spain and boasts a thriving nightlife. The city is on the beautiful  Manzanares River. I would definitely want to visit the Golden Triangle of Art: the Prado Museum, (“Museo del Prado” in Spanish), National Museum featuring pre-20th-century art, the Reina Sofía Museum, featuring 20th century modern art and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.

OK after writing this I have totally convinced myself. A Spanish holiday it is. Only problem is: where to visit first?
