My favourite part of our house is this little corner of the twins’ room. We had it made for us by a carpenter just after they were born and he created a space which is absolutely what I had in my mind. I wanted some shelves to fill the small space in the wall between where there used to be a fire place and where the boiler is. It has five shelves and space at the bottom for toys.
The shelves are perfect for us because they are overflowing with books. They aren’t particularly tidy and I don’t keep them in any order, although it might make it a bit easier to find a favourite if I did. However they are totally accessible for the girls and any time they want to have a bit of quiet time to themselves they can sit there and relax and have a read.
This is also my favourite space because if we are there it means it must be the twins’ bedtime. Lovely as they are, bedtime is my favourite time of day. not just because it means a few moments where there isn’t a little person dragging on my trousers demanding attention but also because it is such a lovely time with them. I used to sit with both of the twins on my lap and try to read them a story. Now they are out of a cot they lie in bed and I can read to both of them. It’s easier but i kind of miss the double cuddles and the fights over who got to turn the page.
There are a couple of things other than just books. There is a cuddly Elmer – one of the twins’ favourite book characters. I bought him during my first teaching practice and have used him whenever I’m reading the stories. the twins recently took him in to nursery when they were doing an Elmer topic.
There are also some cute night lights as the twins don’t like it to be completely in the dark at night time.

When I started writing this post it made me think of this quote from Roald Dahl: “So, please, oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your TV set away, and in its place you can install, a lovely bookcase on the wall.”
I don’t entirely agree with Roald Dahl’s advice to throw the TV set away – however the joys of a lovely bookcase are unparalleled.
