We had the perfect family day out this week with a trip to Twycross Zoo. Our girls love animals and all their favourites are here. Charlotte was in heaven, as she loves monkeys and Twycross is the World Primate Centre. It is the only zoo in the UK where you can see all types of great ape – gorilla, orangutan, chimpanzee and bonobo.
There are around 500 different types of animals to see. Spring is a wonderful time to visit as there were so many baby animals to see. There is a sticker on the windows of the enclosure telling you there is a zoo baby present. It is so sweet to see the babies cuddling with their parents.
The zoo is very well signposted and it is easy to follow the maps. There are clear labels giving lots fo facts about the animals in the zoo so you can learn about them as you go around. We liked the big signs where you could compare yourself to the size of the gorilla and Siamang.
We also liked the signs where you can see what you’d look like as a monkey. For some, there isn’t much difference!
There are lots of beautiful statues around the park – perfect for a photo opportunity.
Rose loves cats so she was pleased there were some stunning Amur Leopards. They acted just like our cats, stretching and licking each other and even walking along the fence just the same. We were saddened to hear that this leopard is considered to be the most endangered of all big cats with only between 30 and 35 left in the wild. We didn’t realise the snow leopards enclosure is right next to the cafe at the beginning of the trip. Next time we visit we are planning to get lunch at the cafe so we can watch the snow leopards through the huge window in their enclosure.
We were really excited to see the larger animals. It’s incredible to see the size of the giraffes and elephants up close.
One of our highlights was seeing the bush dogs. These are amazing semi-aquatic creatures who have webbed feet to aid swimming. They were really cute with a reddish colour.
This bush dog was really interested in the visitors, the girls wanted to stroke him
We enjoyed seeing the Humbolt penguins and posing for a photo.
There is a beautiful flock of Chilian Flamingos, who seemed a particularly bright pink in the dull English day. It was fascinating to see them standing on one leg to preserve their heat.
There are so many animals we have never seen before. The Black-tailed prairie dogs were really cute and fluffy. When we got home we enjoyed looking at the animal section of the Twycross Zoo website. It has so many facts about the animals and where they come from. It also shows how these animals are endangered and what the zoo is doing to help them.
There are lots of opportunities to get close to the animals. There is a lemur walkthrough, it was a bit cold so we only spotted one. The girls enjoyed feeding the lorikeets nectar. They come and land on your hand if you are brave enough. It costs £1 for a pot of nectar.
There is also a butterfly enclose. These are both great for if the British weather lets you down and it starts to rain. The butterflies fly really close and are so stunning.
There is a pet area where you can see guinea pigs and ridiculously fluffy rabbits. The goats were particularly friendly.
I was so pleased I told the girls to save their pocket money all holiday for the shop. There were so many things for them to buy. To be honest they could have stayed in the shop for their whole visit. I thought the toys were really reasonably priced and there was something for every price range so you could get something to remember your day.
We had an amazing day at Twycross Zoo. there was so much to see and a large play area for the children as well as another being built. We visited on an overcast day which was fine because there are several indoor enclosures. There is still plenty to do on our next visit.
