Keeping the kids entertained on a budget. Your end of summer guide!

It felt like a million miles away when the holidays first started, but now the summer break is drawing to a close and whether you’ve been counting down the days or you’re simply dreading them going back to school, one thing is certain – your bank balance will certainly enjoy a break!

Summer is all about making memories, days out with the kids, lots to eat and drink and lots of fun in the sun, but it’s not always kind to our finances, especially if like most families, you’re on a bit of a budget. Days out to theme parks, zoos, aquariums, visiting museums and cities and new places all add up, and it’s not always easy to be frugal during the summer holidays. However, if you’re interested in making your money work as hard as you do, check out Wealthify’s Investment app by clicking the link.

So, with this in mind, I’ve come up with some simple ways you can keep the kids entertained for less as the summer break draws to a close.

Have fun!

Garden camp out

We can still take full advantage of the light evenings and the fact that bedtimes aren’t fully regimented yet. Set up a tent in the garden and enjoy reading stories by torchlight and talking about the events of the day. You could even light the BBQ and toast some marshmallows, followed by a spot of stargazing! The perfect end to a busy day.

Try a new trail

I’m sure most families have their favourite walking trails and picnic spots that they like to frequent, I know we do! So, before the summer ends, why not find a new one? Taking the family for a walk is free and it’s a great opportunity for the kids to get some fresh air and burn off some energy! Take a picnic and make a day of it.

Outdoor painting

Keeping the kids busy and occupied while you get a few jobs done around the house is one of the biggest challenges us parents face during the summer! So, giving them some outdoor painting activities to do should keep them busy for a little while at least. I like to keep back things like boxes, old plant pots, surplus cardboard etc and then let them paint them with poster paints and decorate with all kinds of bits and bobs from the arts and crafts drawer. Plus, it’s all outside – so any mess they make will be washed away by the inevitable rain!

Do something local

We tend to opt for new and exciting places during the holidays, discovering what the rest of the country has to offer. But how about exploring your local area? Local museums are usually bursting with plenty of history and exhibitions that will keep the kids entertained – and they’re usually free! Art galleries, sculptures in the park, historic buildings and English Heritage sites are all there on your doorstep! Make a day of it and explore them all.
