A part of our Christmas traditions is to look through the radio Times and choose what films and TV shows we want to watch over the Christmas break. Christmas is lovely but stressful and you need some down time to relax and unwind, cuddle up on the sofa with popcorn and mugs of hot chocolate and watch a festive film of a Christmas classic. We like to choose our favourite shows and record them to watch whenever we need some quite time, which is why a freesat hd box is essential at this time of year. (You can find good deals on hd boxes at Tesco Direct!)
These are the things we will be taping.
Cinderella
Monday 22nd 4pm BBC1
With the new adaptation coming up it is good to watch the charming Disney original from 1950 for the first time it is shown on digital TV.
The Snowman
Tuesday 23rd December 7.30 C4
This has to be watched at Christmas every year. It’s beautiful and magical just what a Christmas film should be. The final scene with the melted snowman remains one of the most devastating few moments of screen time. Also see the charming sequel: The Snowman and the SnowDog on Christmas Eve at 7.55 C4
The Gruffalo
Tuesday 23rd December 3.05 BBC1
If you don’t know all the words to this by now then you can’t have small children under the age of 5. A wonderful tale of the underdog mouse tricking all the animals. This is such a well loved story but it has been delightfully recreated with music, and animations to enhance the retelling. See also Room on the Broom 11am Boxing day BBC1 for the funny tale of the rather incompetent witch and her animal friends.
101 Dalmations
Wednesday 24th December 4.45 BBC1
Another Disney classic this is worth keeping on tape. A glorious adventure starring a host of cute puppies and one of the scariest villains on screen.
Arthur Christmas
Thursday 25th December 6pm C4
One of our favourite Christmas films, this is a fun watch for all the family. Arthur is the every man who saves Christmas with his dogged determination and great collection of Christmas jumpers.
The Boy in the Dress
Friday 26th December 6.55 BBC1
The book by David Walliams has proved a monumental success and has inspired children across the country to read. The adaption looks great and I can’t wait to see how it is transformed onto the small screen.
The Secret Garden
Saturday 27th December 2.45 C5
We have had a little robin banging on our window every day for the last few weeks. Apparently robins are really territorial and he is trying to fight with his reflection which he thinks is another robin. this has reminded me of one of my favourite books as a child, The Secret Garden. i’m planning on reading this as a bedtime story and then saving up the film to watch afterwards.
ET The Extra-Terrestrial
Sunday 28th December 3.20 ITV
I’m not sure if my girls are still a bit young for this one. I remember finding some of the scenes a bit scary – but then I’ve always been a total wuss. It is worth it for the magical flying bike scene which still looks as spectacular 32 years later. Wow was it really 32 years ago?
The Muppets
Monday 29th December 6.20 BBC1
It ain’t easy being green but luckily the Muppets are back in this wonderful funny film with some great songs.
