5 Picture Books to Make You Giggle

Do you want a book to make you giggle? These five are brilliant for 4-8 year olds. The humour and brilliant illustrations along with the loveable characters will make even reluctant readers sit still.

Dogs Don't Do Ballet

Dog’s Don’t Do Ballet by Anna Kemp and Sara Ogilvie

This book is brilliant fun and so silly. There is something about seeing a picture of Biff the dog dancing in a tutu that is guaranteed to make you smile. The story also has a lesson behind the humour, that you should ignore people who tell you that you can’t do something. I love the way the dog changes everyone’s mind. We also enjoyed finding Biff in the pictures when he was hiding.

Rhinos Don't Eat Pancakes

Rhinos Don’t Eat Pancakes by Anna Kemp and Sara Ogilvie

from the same author and illustrator combo, this book has a similar warmth and humour. this one is an object lesson for the parents, to listen to your child. They are so busy all the time that they don’t even notice that there is a rhino in their house. I can certainly identify with that one, I don’t think I’d like the extra mess. The surprise ending is perfect and the book gives you a warm feeling all over!

The Diabolical Mr Tiddles

The Diabolical Mr Tiddles by Tom McLaulin

This is the first picture book from Tom McLaulin and it was a brilliant introduction to his wit and visual style. Harry has always wanted a cat – but the one he gets is up to all kinds of diabolical mischief. We loved it especially the part with the queen, who I hope would be so forgiving in real life.

Barry The Fish With Fingers

Barry The Fish With Fingers by Sue Hendra

This book is delightful. Barry is such a wonderful, happy character. It is a touch of genius to have a fish with fishfinger fingers. The moral of not being jealous is told beautifully and never gets in the way of the laughs. This is one to read again and again.

Keith the Cat With the Magic Hat

Keith the Cat With the Magic Hat by Sue Hendra

Again you will find Sue Hendra’s trademark of brightly coloured characters and catchy rhyming text. This charming story has the delightfully named Keith the cat trying to impress his mates. Of course this will never go well, but he manages to blag his way out of the rather embarrassing predicament of having an ice cream land on his head.
