Now the weather has turned colder my thoughts start to turn to warm Summer holidays.  I always dreamed about a luxury holiday in Mauritius but thought once I had children this was no longer an option. However looking more closely, and spending far too much time browsing through holiday brochures, there is actually so much to do in Mauritius with kids. It is now top of my wish list.

Mauritius is a small island in the Indian Ocean off the Southeast coast of Africa. Most people on the island speak French so good opportunities to practice the language if you have been learning it at school. The island is full of luxury hotels and there are lots of opportunities to have and adventure and experience something new.

Beautiful beaches

The main requirement of my children on holiday is somewhere to swim. They will play for hours on the beach and while I love our UK beaches they are not a patch on the stunning beaches in Mauritius. With over 160km of beach to choose from, there is a lot sandy spots to choose from. The sand is soft and white, there are sheltered lagoons and coral reefs.  It really is a tropical paradise. shutterstock_128953247-1

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden

There is something so peaceful about walking through a botanical garden and a good change of pace after a few days on the beach. The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam botanical gardens is commonly called the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden after the region it is in, which is a slightly easier name to say. You would need more than a week to cover the many acres of land and view over 650 tropical plants. children would love to see the giant water lillies which grow in the botanical gardens. Visits are free for the under fives.

Making friends with a Giant Tortoise

Children love animals and in Mauritius there are lots of amazing creatures you ca get up close to and provide your child with an unforgettable experience. In Mauritius you can swim with dolphins and see whales in the ocean, as well as soft shell terrapins. On the land you can see geckos and boas, monkeys and rather strange looking pink pigeons. unfortunately the dodos that once inhabited the island are now extinct, although you can visit the Dodo Museum in Port Lois. The most appealing creatures for children is the giant tortoises. You can visit them at the Vanille Reserve des Mascareignesnature park, along with a host of other amazing creatures. This magical place houses over a thousand tortoises and allows you to feed them. What a magical experience for a child.

So if your dreaming of the perfect family holiday to create unforgettable family memories then look no further than the beautiful island of Mauritius. As Mark Twain allegedly said, “Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and heaven was copied after Mauritius.”
